I discovered yesterday that, if I ever get to England, I wouldn't have to give up my US citizenship to become a citizen. This makes me happy for some reason.

Therefore, yay.

I'm going to go back to slogging through pictures of Victorian-era clothing now. X3

In which I ramble on about 'Hamlet'

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 24, 2008, 5:15 PM
Gods, but I'm obsessed now. I just saw the Kenneth Branagh version; I didn't much care for the 18th-century quasi-Viennese setting at first, but it kind of grew on me.

I also realized that I've seen at least four different film versions of 'Hamlet' - the Lawrence Olivier version, a version where Patrick Stewart played Claudius, the Mel Gibson version, and the Kenneth Branagh version.

I'm such a nerd. X3

I'm not entirely certain why I should be so obsessed with Hamlet, other than identifying with the title character, for various reasons I'll not go through here. I've loved 'Hamlet' for a very long time, since middle school I believe. I was forced to read 'Macbeth' in an advanced reading class, and I apparently liked it, because I went off and read 'Hamlet' and 'Julius Caesar,' both of which vie for the place as my favourite play. I prefer those two tragedies to all Shakespeare's other works, for whatever reason.

And now, I have to decide which movie version of 'Hamlet' I prefer - toss-up between the last two versions I mentioned. I've loved the Mel Gibson version for a very long time, since high school, but I find myself obsessing over the Kenneth Branagh version. The first one's more raw, it's true - the second one, though, is a bit more complex, more claustrophobic. You get the sense of Hamlet putting on his madness; and perhaps, towards the end, there's the feeling that it might not be an act anymore.

Or maybe I'm just suffering from recto-cranial inversion. X3 Anyway, love 'Hamlet', nerd, bla bla.
